The National Stock Exchange (NSE) is India’s largest stock exchange with presence in over 300 cities. It generates volumes of over 600 million shares annually. The NSE was incorporated in 1992 and was given recognition as a stock exchange in April 1993. It started operations in June 1994 on the Wholesale Debt Market Segment. Subsequently it launched the Capital Market Segment in November 1994 as a trading platform for equities and the Futures and Options Segment in June 2000 for various derivative instruments. The NSE is by far the most dominant stock exchange in India handling almost two-thirds of the cash market volumes and 99% of the derivatives segment volumes.
